Budget airline HK Express will soon operate more non-stop flights to Japan than any Hong Kong airline, overtaking the combined might of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon in the key market.

In March 2019, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific bought low-cost airline HK Express for the equivalent of $628 million. Cathay Pacific will start controlling HK Express by the end of the year. The move highlighted Cathay Pacific’s desire to enter the low-cost segment.

Last week, HK Express announced that it would start flying to Okinama, Japan from September 26 onwards. This will give HK Express 137 flights per week to Japan, which is more than the total number of flights to Japan (135) of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon.

China-backed HK Express tapped into low-cost flights to Japan, a popular destination for Hong Kong people.
