Internet connectivity is so vital to our lives nowadays. Whether it’s responding to business emails, organising our social calendar or paying our bills, being online is increasingly important in so many aspects of our lives. When we’re on a long haul flight, being able to get online is a huge bonus. Of course the seat-back entertainment facilities do help to pass the time, but there’s only so much that can be offered. When you can simply access the Internet on your own mobile device, you have much more choice. You may want to work on a collaborative document for work, or perhaps you just want to report the progress of your flight to your friends and family via Facebook. Spending several hours without Internet access can be quite frustrating for many of us, but this is set to change as more airlines begin to introduce gate-to-gate Internet connectivity on their flights.

Qatar brings gate-to-gate connectivity to the MENA region

Qatar Airways has recently made an announcement that it will be the very first airline to bring onboard Internet to the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Up until now, online connectivity has only been allowed when flying at a height greater 3000m above sea level, but with the development of new technologies, Qatar is now promising full, uninterrupted connectivity from gate to gate.

No compromise to safety

New developments ensure that the new onboard Internet service will not cause interference with the flight systems and is no threat to the safety of the aircraft. Restrictions will remain in place however, for GSM and SMS services when flying under 3000m above sea level.

No plans to remove in-flight entertainment systems

For those of you who love the convenience of watching a movie on the seat-back screens, you’ll be pleased to know that the popular Oryx One system will remain in place. While the Internet is very useful for keeping in touch and catching up on emails, the Oryx One system is perhaps the better option for entertainment, with a screen bigger than most mobile devices, and of course you don’t have to hold it or have it resting on your tray, so you can enjoy a movie while using your tray for your meal or drinks. A small factor, but when space it at a premium, it can make all the difference to the comfort of your flight.
