What’s the most dangerous airline? Flying can often be a little nerve racking, especially for those of us who don’t fly all that frequently. Some bad turbulence can have our imaginations running away with us with airplane disaster movie scenes running through our heads. But the truth is, that flying is the safest way to travel, serious incidents are rare and you’re generally in good hands with competent pilots and cabin crew.
However, of course, some airlines are safer than others. AirlineRatings.com put together a list of airlines, ordered by their safety rating, and the list always makes for some interesting reading, or worrying reading, depending on which end of the list you’re looking at!
The ratings are based on a wide range of criteria and include whether the airline operates only Russian-built planes, if they meet the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) safety standards and whether or not they are FAA endorsed.
One out of seven stars is a little concerning!
The rating is based on a star system, the highest rating being seven stars. While many of the most famous airlines such as Emirates, British Airways and Qatar Airways have a full seven stars, there are those at the other end of the spectrum with just the minimum one star for safety. Out of the hundreds of airlines rated, 7 of them scored just one point for safety this year.
Here are the most dangerous airlines
Those airlines with a 1 star rating for 2023 are:
- Aeroflot
- UTair
- Rossiya
- Ural Airlines
- Nordavia
- Podeba
Should you avoid these airlines?
While a 1 star rating is the lowest score you can get, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re risking your life every time you fly with one of these low scoring airlines. You may wish to avoid them, and travel with an airline that scores more highly, but in reality, you may not have a choice if there are no other airlines that fly to your destination on your day and time of choice. However, you shouldn’t spend your entire flight in fear! Airline travel becomes increasingly safe year on year, with new safety innovations being implemented regularly. You’re still far more likely to die or be injured in your own car on your way to the airport, than you are to die or be injured on a plane, even if you are flying with an airline with a 1 star safety rating!
